What is Linux?
Linux is the operating system that runs on the ONE. It is gaining popularity because it is free to distribute but is similar to Microsoft Windows. Linux is also open source, meaning that it can be developed and modified by anyone and redistributed for free. In fact you'll be able to modify the operating system on the ONE! The version of Linux on the ONE is Linos 2.6.21.
Can I use Windows?
The answer to this is yes and no! You cant install Windows XP or programs like Microsoft Word on the ONE. However the ONE is compatible with Windows software (Office 2007 files are not compatible but then they arnt even compatible with previous versions of Microsoft Office!). For example, if you write a document or spreadsheet on the ONE you can open these up in Word and Excel on your home PC. This works the other way too, so files made in Word and Excel will open in the ONE.
What is the ONE like to use?
The ONE has been designed to be a straightforward introduction to computing. Therefore, the simple and intuitive desktop guides you to the programs you want with a couple of clicks. Once the programs are open, they are all in a standard format and layout so the skills you'll pick up are transferable to other brands of software. Linux is also very standard in that most of what you do is clicking the left and right mouse buttons to make the ONE do what you want.

How do I use the ONE as a tablet PC?
The ONE has all the computer parts built behind the screen so you can detach the keyboard and use the ONE in tablet form. You still have full usability because the ONE has a mouse emulator on the back, which lets you move and click the cursor to navigate around, and it also has a virtual keyboard so you can type. When you want to use the keyboard again simply pop the screen back into the dock and it will work straight away. Using the ONE as a tablet lets you do computing in a new and interesting way that isn't offered by many other laptops.
